Once your chosen slab is transferred to your fabricator, they’ll examine it in detail. Natural stone can include subtle characteristics like natural fissures, resin fills, or bold veining. Some of these features are visual highlights; others may affect where or how the slab is cut.
Your fabricator will assess the slab to determine the best way to work with its unique structure. If you have any specific areas you want showcased or avoided, be sure to point them out — they’ll take that into account when planning the layout.
Before any cutting begins, the fabricator will measure the installation space — usually your kitchen or bathroom. They’ll note cabinet dimensions, wall clearances, appliances, and any sink or faucet cutouts needed.
Using this data, they’ll create a digital template, which allows them to position the shapes of your counters directly over your slab’s surface. This is your chance to preview how the veining and patterns will appear once installed, and to make adjustments if needed.
With the template finalized, the slab is ready for cutting. Fabricators may use a combination of tools — such as diamond saws, CNC machines, or waterjet cutters — depending on the complexity of the design.
At this stage, the slab is also shaped with your chosen edge profile. From clean, modern edges to more traditional decorative styles, the edge detail helps define the look and function of your finished surface.
Once all cuts and shapes are completed, the stone goes through final polishing and finishing. The exposed edges are smoothed and polished to match the face of the slab, and sealant is applied (especially important for porous stones like granite and marble) to protect the surface from stains and wear.
